Historical Awareness – Mlk Day

Today is just another day of the week, Monday, January 17, 2011. For most people they are just excited that they get the chance to stay home today from either school or their job. I would even go as far to say that most even care or less why they get this day off and probably even think it is ridiculous that we have this holiday. Today is not just another day of the week, but a national holiday, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. It is also ironic that today is MLK Day, shortly after the tragedy in Arizona.

Dr. King had inspired so many people throughout his short lived life and his strong powerful messages moved people in a way that touched them spiritually. He had imagined a world of equality throughout and respect for one another. His inspirations would soon go down in history as the change that helped grow our society.

With all the senseless violence and hatred for one another that still runs rapid throughout this world, we must not forget this man and his wonderful message. We all know the famous, “I Have a Dream” speech at the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, DC on August 28, 1963. It just seems that nobody cares to make peace or change their way of thinking. Racism still exists today and it is mindboggling to me after all these years, why people could possibly hate someone only for the color of their skin. I would say to those who view this day as just a day off of reality, to read up on Dr. King and his message and what he stood for and I can almost guarantee that you will probably feel the same way. Now after you read up on the man and what he went through and the time period in which he lived, picture him white. Not sure what to think now are you? What if the tables were turned and it was not blacks behind those picket lines and freedom marches, but nothing but white people? How would you want to be treated if you were not granted the same privileges as the next man? Dr. King was a man that stood up and took a stand on what he believed in and didn’t accept the initial answers he was given. Where would be as a society if this man never existed?

Here’s another piece to the story, do you love sports? I absolutely love sports with a passion! I cannot get enough sports as my television stays on ESPN usually. Do you love movies and music too? I bet you are like me and couldn’t get enough of Michael Jordan when you were growing up or Ken Griffey, Jr. You probably sit anxiously awaiting the next movie from Denzel Washington or Halle Berry. What about Michael Jackson? Do you know how many fans that guy had in his life? Wow! One of my favorite athletes today is Dwayne Wade. You may prefer to cheer for Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Tiger Woods, or Shaquille O’Neal. My point is, you cheer for these guys or want someone to do something for you or your cause, but you could care or less how they got to be in the position they are in. The reason they are all able to play sports and make millions of dollars today is because of several select people, Martin Luther King being one of those people.

Dr. King stood for peace and civil rights with nonviolent methods. He stood for equality in all men and believed that the most potent weapon available to oppressed people in their struggle for justice and human dignity is the method of nonviolent resistance. Even after going through all his struggles and watching so many people get treated with hate and disrespect, he still kept his beliefs above all. He did more than just help fight for Rosa Parks giving up her seat that day in Alabama, or give that memorable speech in Washington, DC he was a natural born leader. You cannot teach that, as you are born with the passion and drive to do what’s right. We would not be where we are today if it were not for Martin Luther King, Jr.

We shouldn’t forget why we celebrate this day or question why this person deserves a holiday, but we need to appreciate the cause and respect the man that helped change the way we see people. Dr. King was able to keep pushing his positive message where soon his small amount of followers became a nation of believers.

You can learn from Dr. Martin Luther King and put some of his beliefs into your own lives. If you want to make change to something or use your voice for positive reinforcement, then by all means do so. You can apply the courage that he was able to show and stand for something. Don’t just accept what is front of you, but question it. You can have a dream and make a difference in your life and in the lives of others if you just believe and have a message. Perhaps your dream or message will help create or influence the next piece of history that the rest of us will be talking about.
